workers finding pharmaceutical wastes
Project Brief.
The Challenge
US client was facing concerns from workers finding pharmaceutical wastes in alternative
fuels produced in a pre-processing facility and needed to determine at what levels were the active ingredients harmful to humanhealth, why full blister packs were littering surroundings, how to get worker buy in.
The Solution
A risk evaluation was made to determine which class of pharmaceutical waste could be handled safely with prescribed PPEs. Cancer treating drugs, radiochemical drugs, and endocrine disruptor drugs were banned. Accepted pharmaceuticals would no longer be shredded with other wastes at high speeds. Small boxes of pharmaceuticals would be loaded on conveyer belt and directly fed into the kiln.
The Results
The overall result was that the client was able to convince workers that it was
safe to handle pharmaceutical wastes under the defined conditions.
